They still have most of the 'traditional' software market cornered. They've been passed because Apple has been incredibly successful with portable devices and Microsoft... hasn't. I don't think I've ever even seen a Zune in real life.

I don't think I've ever even seen a Zune in real life.
To be fair you can't really buy a Zune here in England, well, a Zune HD anyway. |

But, yeah, letting Apple have the market more or less to themselves certainly isn't going to help.

I actually got to try out a Zune HD for the first time tonight, courtesy of a Microsoft rep (who tried to get a Windows Phone 7 device, but apparently these things are difficult even for Microsoft employees to get!)
He said that Microsoft had given up on the old approach to phones, and that Windows Phone 7 was copying as much as it could (legally) from the iPhone. At least he was able to admit to it!
EDIT: And my thoughts on the Zune: much smaller than I expected, games (I tried PGR) seemed pretty smooth, interface seemed a bit strange
