Got my copy in the post yesterday, and from what I've played so far it's probably the best Mario Kart to date. It combines the strengths of Mario Kart DS (combination of new and classic tracks, online gameplay and new powerups) with decent Wii controls (not sure about the Wii wheel yet) and perhaps the best and most hectic multiplayer Mario Kart experience to date (12 players online is quite insane).
The online seems very smooth at the moment, though I was playing it a day before the official release. The online system is basic but well implemented, definitely a lot better than I was expecting at least.
I'll post up my friend code later, anyone else picked up a copy yet?

Man, I want this so hard. I'm so broke though, so I will have to wait to pick it up (along with more Wiimote's. My one is not enough for multiplayer fun ). Any impressions now that you've sunk a little more time into it? How's the wheel controls? Are there other control schemes?

You can use the GameCube controller too.

It's a Mario Kart game, therefore it's fun.
The wheel takes some getting used to, but feels much more natural than the 'vanilla' Wii controller (which, to be honest, takes even more getting used to). The only bad part, control-wise, is that the trigger button (used for drifting) is incredibly awkward and hard to find in the heat of the moment.

Any impressions now that you've sunk a little more time into it? How's the wheel controls? Are there other control schemes? I'm not a huge fan of the wheel - I actually find the controls feel more unresponsive whilst using it even compared to just using the Wii remote on its own. My favourite setup is the remote + nunchuck option. I tried with the GameCube controller as well, but having the tricks mapped to a button doesn't work as well as a shake of the remote. Overall it's pretty much the best Mario Kart game so far. The new tracks are incredibly varied, and the classic tracks are some of the best from past games.

Oh man John, the online aspect totally escaped my mind. Damn, that does sound fun. Maybe if I pinch a few pennies for a few weeks...

We can have a match with all the active members of Bytesized Gaming in it at once, and with room to spare!
Can't wait to hit one of you with a green turtle shell just as you near the finish.

ZING!! (it's so true...)
So about the online aspect: is snaking still possible? Is it pervasive yet, and ruining the experience?

Snaking is gone, so basically online Mario Kart is fun again.

I just picked it up today while I was pre-ordering GTA4 (Co-op!!), and I must say John is right, it's probably the best mario kart ever. The gameplay feels like a cross between DS style MK and the original MK, the game feels natural even on the old classic SNES courses (Ghost Valley 2!).
About the wheel, it's too bad about that eh? Though people who use them make a nice whooshing sound as I go by in multiplayer.
