Nintendo hints at end of Game Boy name

While it would have been virtually unthinkable just a few years ago, Nintendo is apparently now contemplating the possibility of a world without Game Boys. That's according to Nintendo marketing exec George Harrison, who recently told GameDaily.biz that we may have seen the last of the name, specifically saying that "it's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark."
Man. There have been game boys since I can remember. The game boy color was the first gaming device I bought with my own money. These are sad times folks. Sad

Original story.

The Gameboy line has brought me so many hours of fun over the yeras. This will be the end of some youth nostalgia. Sad

Didn't the success of the DS pretty much confirm this a couple of years ago?

I thought I had remembered Nintendo always sticking to its story about how the DS and the GameBoy were separate product lines, and one would not interfere with the other. Or maybe it was the acid I was taking! Shocked

I was wandering how Nintendo would handle the "successor" of the DS. I can't imagine them going back to GameBoy after the popularity of the DS.

They did say that at first as even Nintendo were unsure of how the DS would sell. They left it open so they could continue the Game Boy line if the DS was a sales disaster.

Where else can they really go with the DS though? Other than improving the processing power of the unit, there's not much they really can improve on. Unless they want to add more screens...

Surely the Game Boy would be in the same situation?

I think they will just release a DS "2". Same 2 screens, maybe improved touch screen. Better graphics and maybe multimedia features. I can't see them going anywhere else.
